How a Weakened ESPN Became Consumed by Politics

Sitting in his office last September, Mr. Skipper, then ESPN’s president, lit into Ms. Hill, according to people familiar with the meeting. If I punish you, he told her, I’d open us up to protests and come off as racist. If I do nothing, that will fuel a narrative among conservatives—and a faction within ESPN—that the network had become too liberal.

Mr. Skipper chose to spare Ms. Hill. Mr. Trump weighed in on Twitter : “ESPN is paying a really big price for its politics (and bad programming). People are dumping it in RECORD numbers.”

The president’s tweet was hyperbolic, but it tapped into real anxiety at ESPN. What was the way forward for a company shaken to its foundations by the cord-cutting revolution?

Tigers’ Castellanos, Candelario ailing; Greiner makes MLB debut

Kansas City, Mo. – When manager Ron Gardenhire got to the clubhouse Sunday morning, he was notified that right fielder Nick Castellanos was the latest victim of a flu bug that has ravaged the Detroit Tigers’ clubhouse the last week or longer.

“He’s in there right now on a couch sound asleep, covered up in a dark room,” Gardenhire said. “He’s feeling pretty bad. He may wake up and say, ‘Hey, what are you doing?’ but being dehydrated is not the best way to go out in the sun and try to play baseball.”

Castellanos, who had been determined to play all 162 games this season, was not in the starting lineup Sunday. Gardenhire said he might be able to pinch-hit later in the game.

“We hope he can be available later, but we’re not running him out there,” Gardenhire said. “That’s silly.”

Tennessee Waffle House hero launches fundraiser for victims’ families

James Shaw Jr., a Waffle House patron who helped stop a gunman from claiming more victims during a mass shooting. (WZTV)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) – The hero who stopped a man who opened fire at a Tennessee Waffle House and saved lives continued his selflessness by launching a GoFundMe for victims.

James Shaw Jr. stopped further carnage by wrestling away the AR-15 Tyler Reinking used at an Antioch Waffle House to kill four people and injure three others, including Shaw.

Shaw suffered a burn to his hand and cut to his elbow during the fracas, getting the rifle from Reinking, then throwing it behind the counter of the restaurant. Reinking then fled the scene on foot.

Police found two more cartridges of ammunition for the rifle in Reinking’s jacket, which he shed while fleeing back to his nearb...

MoviePass Owner’s Shares Tumble After Stock-Sale Plan

Helios & Matheson Analytics Inc. HMNY -3.28% plans to sell up to $150 million worth of stock and largely pump the money into MoviePass Inc., the fast-growing movie-theater subscription company it bought last year.

The news sent the stock of the cash-strapped company down 17% to $3.19 in after-hours trading.

New York-based Helios said it would use the proceeds from the stock sale to, among other things, increase its ownership stake in MoviePass, of which it already owns about 92%, support the operations of MoviePass and MoviePass Ventures, a subsidiary founded this year, or make acquisitions.

But Helios said in a securities filing that using “all or a portion” of the proceeds for acquisitions would require it to obtain “additional capital to support our operations during such period.”
